He started his journey by trading racing cars and components while also working as a mechanic. In 1966, he founded his own team and acquired a Brabham for Piers Courage, before purchasing the March 711/3 for Henri Pescarolo in 1971, which he entered under the name Frank Williams Racing Cars. With limited resources, the season proved challenging, with a fourth-place finish at Silverstone being the best result.
In 1972, the team (now Team Williams Motul) handed a new March 721 to Pescarolo, while rookie José Carlos Pace drove the 711. Designed by Robin Herd and Geoff Ferris, this model was distinguished by its raised front wing, an idea by Frank Costin, which proved effective in qualifying or when running alone but caused instability when following another car. Powered by a Ford DFV engine and featuring a monocoque chassis, the March 711 aimed to compete with the Lotus 72 and the V12-powered Matra, BRM, and Ferrari. It was used by several drivers, including Ronnie Peterson and Niki Lauda, and it was with this car that Pace scored his first three points in F1.
After unremarkable seasons with Surtees, Pace shone in 1975 at the wheel of the Brabham BT44, winning at Interlagos in a historic one-two finish with Emerson Fittipaldi. The March 711/3 is part of this collection precisely because of the affection Emerson holds for the memory of his friend and rival.
