Lotus 61M – 1970
Formula Ford was introduced in the United Kingdom in 1967 through an initiative by Ford of Europe and chassis manufacturer John Webb. The concept was simple: a single-seater powered by a 1.6-litre Ford Kent engine, fitted with road tyres and a simple suspension with a live rear axle, keeping costs low while ensuring mechanical parity between drivers. Formula Ford 1600 was an immediate success. With no aerodynamic wings, it required drivers to master car control, controlled oversteer and braking technique. It quickly became one of the most important stepping stones for young drivers aspiring to a professional racing career. Lotus was one of the manufacturers to develop chassis for the category, drawing on its extensive experience in the design and construction of single-seater racing cars. The Lotus 61 was introduced in 1969 and achieved almost immediate commercial success. The following year, the 61M version featured aerodynamic refinements, including its distinctive wedge-shaped nose, which helped maintain the car’s competitiveness. This example, part of the Museu do Caramulo collection, is finished in the iconic dark green and yellow colours traditionally associated with Team Lotus.
